BLACK was engaged by Peke Waihanga to deliver the redevelopment of 5–7 Horopito Street, transforming an existing Mount Eden building into a purpose-built facility for Artificial Limb Services.

The project combined clinical, rehabilitation, administration and specialist production spaces within a heavily reworked existing building. Key works included selective demolition, a new two-storey timber-framed structure within the former internal courtyard, new slab and foundation works, lift pit and lift core construction, seismic bracing upgrades, and partial re-roofing. Excavation for the lift pit uncovered almost solid basalt, with a large rock retained from the works for display at the building entrance.

Works were carefully staged around NZALS' operational requirements, keeping the existing workshop running until temporary facilities allowed relocation — reducing disruption while critical services continued.

A major focus was integrating complex building services into the existing structure, including hydraulic, electrical, data, emergency lighting, plumbing, drainage and compressed air systems, coordinated around clinical spaces, fitting rooms, CAD areas and production zones.

SOLUTIONS

  • A staged construction approach kept NZALS' workshop operational throughout, minimising disruption to critical patient services.

  • Complex services integration, including specialist compressed air and power reticulation, was coordinated within a live, operational healthcare facility.

  • A large basalt rock uncovered during lift pit excavation was retained and repurposed as a feature at the building entrance.
